Against this backdrop, the “Livestock Sector Sustainable Development Financing” project is being implemented with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD). This initiative is designed to drive the systemic modernization and renewal of the entire industry.

Modern sustainable livestock farming revolves around a fundamental premise: boosting productivity while minimizing the environmental footprint. This is a matter of both ecology and economics—allowing farmers to maximize output while significantly reducing the consumption of water, feed, and energy.

The AFD project bridges this gap by integrating financial instruments, cutting-edge technology, and hands-on support to help agricultural enterprises transition to this efficient model.

Water: The Vital Resource

As Uzbekistan is a country facing high water stress, the rational management of water resources has become a critical priority. To address this, the project facilitates the implementation of several key technologies:

  • drip irrigation for fodder crops;
  • automated watering systems with precise flow control;
  • water storage and harvesting solutions;
  • soil moisture sensors and smart irrigation automation.

Tangible results are visible even in the short term. Farms can slash water usage by 40–60% while simultaneously increasing fodder yields by 20–30%. Furthermore, these methods help mitigate soil salinity, ensuring the long-term health and productivity of the land.

Feed: Reducing Costs and Enhancing Quality

Feed accounts for up to 70% of the cost of production in livestock farming. Therefore, increasing the efficiency of feed production is a key factor for sustainability.

The AFD project supports:

  • cultivation of drought-resistant crops (alfalfa, sorghum);
  • ensiling and haylage technologies;
  • hydroponic systems for green fodder production;
  • ration optimization.

This approach enables a significant reduction in feed expenditures—averaging 20–30%—while simultaneously boosting animal productivity and mitigating the impact of seasonal fluctuations. Ultimately, farmers achieve not only substantial cost savings but also greater operational stability and a marked improvement in the quality of both dairy and meat products.

Waste as a Resource

Livestock waste has traditionally been viewed as an environmental challenge. However, modern technologies are transforming it into a valuable source of energy and fertilizers.

Key solutions include:

  • biogas plants;
  • biohumus production;
  • composting.

The implementation of these solutions yields a comprehensive impact: greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, while the ability to generate on-site electricity and heat emerges. Furthermore, it significantly lowers expenditures on commercial fertilizers and energy resources. For instance, biogas plants typically have a payback period of 3 to 5 years and can reduce energy costs by up to 30%.

Pasture Restoration

Up to 30–40% of the country’s pastures are subject to degradation, which directly impacts the overall productivity of the livestock sector.

Strategic solutions include:

  • rotational grazing;
  • restoration of vegetation cover;
  • pasture load control and management.

As a result, land productivity increases, soil erosion levels decrease, and the ecosystem gradually recovers, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the pastures.

Digitalization and Precision Livestock Farming

Technology is becoming an integral part of the modern farm. Within the framework of the project, the following are being implemented:

  • animal health sensors;
  • accounting and analytics systems;
  • GPS monitoring.

This allows for a reduction in livestock mortality, an increase in productivity, and more precise cost management, making production more efficient and sustainable.

Animal Welfare

Modern farms focus not only on technology but also on animal housing conditions. Key elements include:

  • ventilation and microclimate systems;
  • comfortable housing facilities;
  • automated feeding.

As a result, animal productivity can increase by 20–25%, while the disease rate decreases, directly impacting the stability and efficiency of the farm.

Financing

Agricultural development is impossible without access to investment. The AFD project helps farmers overcome this barrier through:

  • credit programs;
  • financing for technology implementation;
  • support for farm modernization.

This accelerates the transition to sustainable models and makes modern solutions accessible to farmers.

Comprehensive Impact and Development Prospects

The project’s results are evident across several levels. From an environmental perspective, water consumption is reduced, emissions are decreased, and land resources are gradually being restored. The economic impact is reflected in increased farmer incomes, lower costs, and enhanced farm resilience. In social terms, it creates new jobs and contributes to improving the quality of life in rural areas.

At the same time, a foundation is being laid for the future: the coming years are expected to see an increase in the number of “smart farms”, active implementation of water-saving technologies, and the expansion of biogas solutions. Today, the AFD project already demonstrates a scalable model for sustainable livestock farming.
